About
ARTIST STATEMENT
James Calderwood is a multidisciplinary artist and designer whose work explores the relationship between the architectural imagination and the natural/cultural landscape. A trained landscape architect, he studied sculpture at Syracuse University with Rodger Mack who encouraged him to explore welded steel sculpture, portrait sculpture, and the foundry process of casting molten metal. Since then he has continued to blur boundaries and celebrate cross-pollination between disciplines. Drawing from surrealist and minimalist art, as well as 1970’s land art, his pieces often reference natural and architectural symbolism and frequently incorporate or reconfigure found domestic objects. Like Maya Lin, Allan Wexler, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Tony Smith he draws on his architectural background to express a unique artistic vision. His work has been exhibited in galleries and outdoor installations throughout New England, and has been favorably reviewed by the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and the Providence Journal.
